Sex After Hernia Surgery

Sex After Hernia Surgery

If you have had hernia repair surgery, you will likely not have any negative long-term effects, including problems with sexual intercourse. In general, most people are able to start having sex after a brief recovery period. The length of the recovery period depends on a number of factors, including the location of the hernia and the type of surgery performed.

After any hernia surgery, you can expect some soreness and swelling for several days following the procedure. In addition, the anesthesia used may cause you to be easily fatigued for 1-2 weeks and it’s normal for people to not have the energy to have sex.

Your hernia specialist at Avalon Hernia may recommend that you refrain from sexual intercourse for 1-3 weeks, depending on:

  • The location of your hernia
  • Type of hernia repair
  • Your age and general health
  • If there were any complications

Hernia Locations

Hernia types are grouped by their location, and include:

Inguinal Hernias

Inguinal hernias are the most common type of hernia, and recovery time will depend on whether it was an open procedure or laparoscopic procedure. With open hernia surgery, the surgeon typically makes a large incision near the hernia to repair the weak area. Full recovery may take longer after open surgery as opposed to laparoscopic surgery.

Laparoscopic hernia repairs consist of fixing tears in the abdominal wall (muscle) with small incisions, telescopes, and a patch (mesh). This minimally invasive surgical technique will allow most patients to experience a faster recovery and faster turnaround to return to work and normal activities (including sex) with decreased pain. For men, restrictions on sexual activity depend on how quickly the incision sites and scrotal swelling and discoloration heal; for some people, recovery takes only 1 week, but for others it may require 2-3 weeks. As a general guideline, it’s ok to have sex after hernia surgery after your body has healed; however, if it becomes painful or uncomfortable, stop and give your body more time to recover.

Ideas for Sex After a Hernia

After any type of hernia surgery, strenuous activity should be avoided during recovery. Some tips for sexual activity following a hernia repair are:

  • Choose a position that won’t stress the incision site by putting weight on it, rub against it, or strain it.
  • Avoid over-exerting yourself by asking your partner to take the lead.
  • Start with slow and gentle movements and gradually increase activity if you are not experiencing discomfort.
  • Place a pillow close to your abdomen to provide support during sex.
  • Use a wedge pillow to create the right angle without having to strain.
  • Try oral sex, which is less likely cause pain or discomfort.
  • Communicate frequently with your partner and change positions, or stop altogether if necessary.
